Hurricane Idalia Updates

  As of Thursday 8/31 1:37 p.m. Clean-up crews are removing some fallen trees and storm debris throughout the campus. There are no reports of damaged buildings or impact to any of the facilities. The campus has power. All classes will continue online asynchronously through Friday, Sept. 1. The campus is closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 4. Normal operations and in-person classes will resume on Sept. 5.   As of Wednesday 8/30 11:15 a.m.   The Dept of Public Safety's phone lines have been intermittently down because of the storm. In case of emergency call (912) 414-7532 or 911. As always during the storm, stay indoors and stay safe. 10:43 a.m. Chatham County is under a Hurricane Warning, Storm Surge Warning, & Tornado Watch. Dr. Mulatu Lemma selected as Top Professor of the Year by IAOTP

Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D., has taught mathematics  at SSU for 28 years.   Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D., professor  of mathematics at Savannah State University (SSU), has been selected as the 2023 Top Professor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). The association honors professionals around the world based on professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities.     Professor Lemma has taught mathematics for more than 30 years, including the last 28 at SSU. He is a recipient of multiple awards for his accomplishments throughout his career. In 2020, he was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). NSF Awards Savannah State University Grant for Microplastics Research The $1,038,533 Grant Supports Research off Georgia’s Coast Savannah State University (SSU) was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation that will support graduate and undergraduate research to help determine the quantities and movement patterns of microplastics within and traversing between the main coastal Georgia river systems and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.   The collaborative project pools resources from SSU, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center Sandy Hook Laboratory, the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. The thrust of the project is three-fold: identify the amount and characteristics for micro- and nano
