SSU 25th Anniversary Gala Honorees: Philanthropy

Mrs. Beatrice W. and Mr. Lemuel Campbell are ardent members of the Savannah State University (SSU) community. Beatrice is a 1967 graduate and dedicated her professional career to the development of young people as an educator teaching mathematics in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System. She retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. Lemuel, an Army veteran, graduated in 1974. His professional career lead him to CSX Transportation, where he served for 36 years, retiring in 2001 after 36 years of service. He is co-Founder of The Liberty City Athletic Organization and coached several teams in the city, county and Catholic league, and has served on several athletic boards for the city and county.  He is an inductee of the Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2013, the couple established the  Lemuel and Beatrice W. Campbell Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund, to which they contribute to annually. Their giving, however, doesn’t stop there! COBA Hosted Spring Honors and Awards Ceremony Savannah State University’s (SSU) College of Business Administration (COBA) recently held its spring Honors and Awards Ceremony to recognize outstanding business student scholars. Speakers at the ceremony included SSU Interim President Cynthia Robinson Alexander, J.D. and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Richard Miller. Mr. Frank J. Mendelson, COBA lecturer and a 2024 UGA Governor’s Teaching Fellow, served as host. SSU Senior Selected as Engineering Technology Student of the Year by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers

Luke Sanders, a graduating senior majoring in civil engineering technology, received the 2024 Engineering Technology Student of the Year from the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.   Luke Sanders’ love for engineering goes back to a STEM program he participated in while in fourth grade. The project involved building a 2-foot structure out of popsicle sticks that was then subjected to weight pressure and simulated seismic vibrations. The Battery Creek High School (S.C.) graduate, found his way to Savannah State University (SSU) in fall 2021, where he has exceled as a scholar, sustaining a 4.0 overall GPA. Outside of the classroom, he is active as a reliever pitcher for the Tigers Baseball team. He also serves as the president of the American Society of Civil Engineers student organization and as the secretary of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.   Savannah State University (SSU) hosted hundreds of prospective students and their families to explore the vibrant campus community and learn more about the university's academic programs, campus life, and opportunities for personal and professional growth during their recent Open Campus day. Open Campus Day provided visitors with a firsthand glimpse into life at Savannah State University.   Savannah State University Will Host 25th Anniversary Scholarship Gala Michael Williams and David Paddison Will Serve as Gala Co-chairs Savannah State University (SSU) will host its 25th Anniversary Scholarship Gala on Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Savannah Riverfront. The Gala provides a meaningful opportunity for the community to support students with financial assistance as they work to earn a college degree. Nearly 90 percent of the students at Savannah State University utilize some form of financial aid to achieve a college degree. This year’s theme is “The Masquerade Gala: An Evening of Scholarship and Splendor.” The evening will feature an Awards of Excellence presentation, honoring a select group of distinguished individuals (alumni and friends of the university) for their contributions to Savannah State and the greater community.
