SSU Hosts 73rd Annual Southern Regional Press Institute

  Savannah State University Hosts 73rd Annual Southern Regional Press Institute Two-day Conference Will Feature More than 20 Communications Professionals Savannah State University (SSU) will host its 73rd annual Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) February 29 – March 1. The annual event seeks to help high school and college students acquire skills in communications. The event is free to attend, but pre-registration is required. The two-day event will feature more than 20 industry professionals presenting on topics related to multimedia and digital communications, journalism, public relations, and strategic communications. This year’s theme is “Artificial Intelligence in the Media and Pop Culture.” The event’s two keynote speakers are Bud Johnson , a professional content creator and freelance photographer and writer; and Paula Wambui-Pinzon , a senior engineer at NetApp. Wambui-Pinzon will present at 9 a.m., Feb. 29 in the Howard Jordan Torian Auditorium. SSU Hosts Asa R. Gordon For the Presentation of “Bullets to Ballots” Feb. 21 - 22

SSU Hosts Asa R. Gordon For the Presentation of “Bullets to Ballots” Feb. 21 - 22 Savannah State University's Asa H. Gordon Library is honored to host Mr. Asa R. Gordon on February 21 at 4 p.m. and February 22 at 2 p.m. to share his new virtual exhibit "Bullets to Ballots: Voting Rights Legacy of the United States Colored Troops." The virtual exhibit shares the impact of black Civil War veterans, freedmen, and white congressional allies during the Reconstruction period. The exhibit will be hosted in the Asa H. Gordon Library’s Art Gallery on the second floor. Asa R. Gordon is a research historian and consulting curator of the African American Civil War Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. His work on the voting rights legacy of the United States Colored Troops garnered him the National Civil Rights Conference Civil Rights and Social Justice Award in 2016. Savannah State University Annual Review of Degree Programs

  Each year the Academic Affairs Office of the University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents requires all 26 USG institutions to review all academic programs degree programs including low enrolled and low degree producing programs.  Institutions are expected to continually monitor the enrollment and production of programs as well as evaluate how their portfolio of programs contribute to the strategic missions of the University System of Georgia and the institution. Savannah State University and the other 25 USG institutions are undergoing this review during the current Spring semester. Under the leadership of the Interim provost, Dr. Richard C. Miller who is working with the academic deans, a comprehensive review of our programs began last week and the process will continue until completed. No program recommendations or decisions have been made.

HBCU Dance History Collaboration is Feb. 17

Who: The Savannah State University (SSU) Fine Arts Department presents the HBCU Dance History Collaborative, featuring the SSU Dance Ensemble, the Bethune Cookman University Dance Ensemble and the Elite Army Dance Group. What: The production is the first collaboration of its kind at SSU and it elevates dance works from two historic institutions in the name of black excellence and black history. The concert features choreography from dance majors Peach Torrence and Syncere Tyus, and sociology major Richard Robbins, along with brilliant student choreography from the Bethune Cookman dance program. When: Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. (Doors open at 7 p.m.) Where: The Kennedy Theater on the SSU campus, 3219 College Street, Savanah, Ga. 31404 There is a $5 suggested donation.

The Savannah Book Festival at SSU is Feb. 16

The Savannah Book Festival at SSU is Feb. 16 Savannah State University will host eight best-selling authors on February 16 as part a book festival hosting event at Savannah State University (SSU). The event provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to attend talks on campus and hear from the authors on a variety of topics, including the writing process, subject matter in fiction and non-fiction, and the publishing process. The event is made possible in partnership with the SFB@Schools program. Estuary Literary Arts Journal Accepting Submissions for Spring 2024 Issue

  Estuary Literary Arts Journal  Accepting Submissions for Spring 2024 Issue   Savannah State University’s Estuary literary arts journal is now accepting submissions for its Spring 2024 issue. Students, faculty and staff are invited to submit to Estuary and take part in both college-level and university-wide competitions. Submissions are being accepted through the month of February.   Competition categories include best poem, best short story and best narrative non-fiction. One winner from each college will be selected with a best overall. Winners receive two copies of the 150-page published journal, a printed award, and an Estuary t-shirt. Best overall in each category also receives a $25 gift card. Authors of all published work receive a free copy of the journal and will be invited to read and the launch party scheduled for late April.   Additionally, the journal will accept submissions of artwork, comics, and anything imaginative.    All submissions should be emailed to est
