Student Profile: Meet Mykel and Markel Rainey

Mykel and Markel Rainey, Randolph-Clay High School Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Class of 2023 Mykel and Markel Rainey were raised in a household of five siblings in Cuthbert, Ga. - population 3,520 and the county seat of Randolph County. Under the close guidance of two parents who had scant patience for academic mediocrity, the fraternal twins learned early that poor grades came at a steep price: no TV or electronics for weeks. “Our parents pushed us since we were in first grade,” said Mykel. “Mom really pushed hard for us to get straight As and Bs.” The parental prodding, coupled with the example of having two older sisters who graduated college - one a physical therapist and the other a nurse – was perhaps the spark that ignited the younger boys’ rise to excellence in high school.   SSU’s Powerhouse of the South is No. 1 for DII November Rankings The Powerhouse of the South, Savannah State University’s (SSU) own marching band, was rated Number 1 in Division II for the Month of November in the latest ranking for the ESPN Band of the Year HBCU band championship. Performances are judged on an individual basis, with judges giving scores for specific areas only, said the announcement of HBCUgameday.com The judging committee is co-chaired by Jackson State Director of Bands Emeritus, Professor Dowell Taylor, and Dr. Julian E. Kareem McMichael  Savannah Film Alliance to Honor SSU’s Kareem McMichael The Savannah Film Alliance will recognize Savannah State University’s (SSU) Kareem McMichael during its annual Honors Gala on November 17 at Victory North in Savannah.   McMichael, the online content manager in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at SSU, is being recognized for his invaluable contributions to the local film and television industry. An award-winning filmmaker and documentarian, McMichael has produced short films in various genres and documentaries with social justice themes.   A native of Macon, Ga., he has worked for the ABC, Fox, and CBS news affiliates in Savannah and is currently serving on the Savannah Cultural Affairs Commission. He is on the Board of Governors for the Southeast Emmy National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and previously served on the Savannah Film Commission. SSU's Jaden Saunders Invited to Play at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, Texas

SSU's Jaden Saunders was invited to participate in the inaugural Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, Texas. Savannah State University's Jaden Saunders has been invited to participate in the inaugural Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest, a new national amateur invitational designed to spotlight the talents of top young golfers from diverse and underrepresented groups. Hosted by the local nonprofit I AM a Golfer Foundation, the event will debut Nov. 13-15 at historic Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, Texas. The Golf Channel will provide live television coverage. The Southwest Airlines Showcase will feature an elite field of 21 men and 21 women, representing more than 33 colleges and universities and 20 states. The program celebrates the history of Savannah State University (SSU) and those who have contributed to its success since its establishment on November 26, 1890. Shannon Sharpe, Class of '91 and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Returns to SSU

On campus for the live taping of ESPN’s First Take, Sharpe joined Stephen A. Smith and host Molly Qerim as they kicked off back-to-back live roadshows at two HBCUs - Savannah State and Winston-Salem State, Smith’s alma mater. Regarded as one of the greatest National Football League’s (NFL) tight ends of all time, Sharpe spent 14 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Denver Broncos and became the first NFL tight end to amass more than 10,000 receiving yards. SSU’s Student-Led Literary Journal Kicks Off Campus Competition, Hosts Special Events Nov. 6 -10   Estuary Creative Arts Journal , Savannah State University’s student-led publication, announces that it is seeking submissions from students across the campus for its 2023-2024 literary competition. The submission categories include best overall poem; best overall short story; and best narrative non-fiction. In addition, the publication will accept artwork, comics, and any works of imagination. The deadline for submission is Feb. 1, 2024. Winners will be announced on Feb. 23. All submissions must be submitted to estuary@savannahstate.edu . All entries must include full name, major, entry category and contact information.
