Student Spotlight on Lauren Gonzalez

Gonzalez represented Savannah State University among 40 HBCUs at the virtual White House Press Briefing in September. Senior Public Relations major Lauren Gonzalez was one of 20 HBCU student journalists to speak at the White House Press Briefing led by White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during National HBCU Week in early September.  “Being able to represent my HBCU, Savannah State University, at the first White House HBCU Week Press Conference was an experience I never imagined I would be able to have, " she said. "There were 20 HBCUs present, and we got to ask those tough questions that most students probably never would have gotten answers to if it weren’t for this opportunity. I will cherish this experience for a lifetime.” 

Annual Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign Now Underway

Faculty and staff members can participate in the Annual Giving Campaign through Friday, Oct. 29. Despite the pandemic, the total raised in fiscal year 2021 was $34,585.33 to impact student success. University Advancement and the campaign committee are excited to announce the 2021 Annual Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign with support from campaign Chair, President Kimberly Ballard-Washington. The campaign co-chairs are Dr. Otilia Iancu, associate professor of Political Science and Public Affairs, and Mr. Marius Davis, academic advisor. With a focus on student scholarships, enhancing academic programs and providing departmental resources for faculty and staff, the campaign goal is 100 percent participation from all faculty and staff members. Savannah State University Showcases New Art Exhibit Featuring Debora Oden

“Thumbprints” is the title of one of the works now on display in Savannah State University’s art exhibition featuring Debora Oden. SAVANNAH, GA -  Savannah State University’s (SSU) Visual and Performing Arts Program is featuring artist Debora Oden’s print installation titled, “Personal Flotation Device (PDF),” now on display through Sept. 30. Located on the university’s campus in the Kennedy Fine Arts Building, the Kennedy Fine Arts Gallery is available for viewing Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit features oversized prints, spans several years, and approaches structure and content from an intense personal desire to not be content with “playing it safe,” but acknowledging that structure, be it a system of rules, guidelines, or a thesis, can serve as a PDF. “Water has always been a potent metaphor for me,” said Oden. “I love the fluid mark, the seemingly effortless gesture that moves around structure instead of pushing through it. Savannah State University NROTC Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Armed Forces Night

Saturday, Sept. 11 is Armed Forces Night at the Savannah State University football game. Military personnel and NROTC midshipmen will be recognized during a special half-time presentation. Sept. 7, 2021 SAVANNAH, GA - This Saturday, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Savannah State University’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), all men and women who serve in the U.S. military will be honored during Armed Forces Night. The event will take place at Theodore A. Wright Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. during the football game against Livingstone College. A special halftime recognition ceremony is planned to honor all military personnel and recognize NROTC midshipmen, officer candidates (students) in training. Savannah State’s Powerhouse of the South marching band will also perform. Service members, as well as alumni, are invited to sit in a designated area during the game.
