Savannah State University NROTC Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Armed Forces Night

Saturday, Sept. 11 is Armed Forces Night at the Savannah State University football game. Military personnel and NROTC midshipmen will be recognized during a special half-time presentation.

SAVANNAH, GA - This Saturday, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Savannah State University’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), all men and women who serve in the U.S. military will be honored during Armed Forces Night. The event will take place at Theodore A. Wright Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. during the football game against Livingstone College.

A special halftime recognition ceremony is planned to honor all military personnel and recognize NROTC midshipmen, officer candidates (students) in training. Savannah State’s Powerhouse of the South marching band will also perform. Service members, as well as alumni, are invited to sit in a designated area during the game.

Members of the military may purchase discounted tickets for $8. Regular admission starts at $12 and students receive free admission with a student ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the stadium and online by visiting ssuathletics.com/tickets. The mission of the university’s NROTC program is to develop young men and women morally, mentally, and physically, and to instill in them the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment for leadership positions in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years.
