Savannah State University’s Students That Are Rising (S.T.A.R.) program recently received a $10,000 donation from Publix to support the S.T.A.R Pantry. The donation will provide more fresh fruits and vegetables for students experiencing food insecurities, in addition to making nutritious foods such as eggs, milk, cheese, ground provisions, fish and meats available to supplement the dry goods in the pantry.

“The S.T.A.R. program would like to extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to Publix charities,” said Jacqueline Awe, director of Student Development. “We appreciate the support to the campus community, and commitment to students with basic provisions as they matriculate toward their degrees. This support and thoughtfulness mean the world to our students. We cannot provide this service without organizations, like Publix, who strive to help others. Thanks for donating to our pantry and giving our students access to fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Prior to receiving the donation, the S.T.A.R. Pantry was a food desert, with items such as cereal, ramen noodles and canned products. The introduction of fresh produce, meats and cheeses helps students to have a more balanced meal.
