Savannah State University Showcases New Faculty and Alumni Art Exhibit

Savannah State University’s Visual and Performing Arts Program is featuring a group exhibition by alumni and faculty on display from Oct. 6 through Dec. 11. An opening reception, with artist talk and voice performance is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 5 – 7 p.m. Located on the university’s campus in the Kennedy Fine Arts Building, the Kennedy Fine Arts Gallery is available for viewing Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Face masks are encouraged.


Featuring work in a variety of media including painting, mixed media, installation, print and live musical performance by 12 artists, the artworks focus on a wide range of themes from philosophical interpretations of religion and spirituality to explorations of identity. Professor Jaquelyn Hamilton will also perform songs from different genres including classical, jazz, spirituals, and show tunes. Professor Eric Jones and Elizabeth Blackmarr will provide accompaniment.


“We are delighted to exhibit the many talented Savannah State University alumni and current faculty, and by combining a musical element, we are excited to show attendees the work of some of our performing arts faculty,” said Savannah State University Director of Galleries, Christen Clougherty, Ph.D.

Faculty members exhibiting include: Peggy Blood, Christen Clougherty, Jaquelyn Hamilton, Eric Jones, Jennifer Mack-Watkins, Nicolas Silberg, and Nichelle Wilson-Parish.
Alumni exhibiting include: Kayla Grayson, Kayla Jefferson, Margie Marie, Tyriq Maxwell and Sharonna Ray.

Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years.
