Savannah State University's Homeland Security & Emergency Management Program Featured in USA TODAY Special Edition

Savannah State University's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Program is featured in a special edition of USA TODAY focused on the Department of Homeland Security.

Savannah State University's (SSU) Homeland Security and Emergency Management Program was recently featured in a USA TODAY Special Edition focused on the Department of Homeland Security. The article, titled, "Hot Commodity - Cybersecurity, emergency response degrees are in demand" highlights select colleges across the country offering degrees related to a growing demand for cybersecurity and emergency management professionals. SSU Faculty member Emmanuel Nojang, professor and coordinator of the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Program, and alumnus Wisdom Akpanagan were interviewed for the story.

Savannah State University is highlighted as one of the leading colleges offering degree paths to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Savannah State University Homeland Security and Emergency Management program is the first in the nation at a historically Black college or university (HBCU), the only bachelor's degree program in homeland security and/or emergency management in the state of Georgia and the only program in the region. Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia. SSU Mourns the Passing of Former Athletics Director

  Savannah State University is deeply saddened by the passing of former Director of Athletics, Mr. Sterling Steward. A proud native of New Orleans, Mr. Steward served as SSU’s Director of Athletics from 2011 to 2018. Throughout his tenure, his leadership, dedication, and commitment to the success of student-athletes made a profound and lasting impact on the entire SSU community. Savannah State University will forever be grateful for Mr. Steward’s numerous contributions to SSU Athletics and the University as a whole.
