33rd Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival Opens Feb. 1

The 2022 Savannah Black Heritage Festival will open Feb. 1 with virtual and in-person events.

The 33rd annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival will take place February 1-20 in a hybrid format. “Celebrating Culture, Celebrating Heritage, Celebrating You” is the central theme of the festival, and the hybrid experience will bring cultural education and exposure to the performing and visual arts, as well as historical gems and entertainment for all demographics and interests throughout the celebration.

“The hybrid experience will allow for a broader range of participants by opening up the accessibility of the celebration of black history,” said Teresa-Michelle Walker Jackson, director of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival. “There will also be select events which will allow for an in-person celebration for those who are interested.”

The schedule will include national and regional musicians of many genres, dance performances, local youth talent, historical tours, and visual art exhibitions by internationally acclaimed and local artists. The festival will also include the W.W. Law Lecture Series, dramatic productions, and a courageous conversation focusing on youth and the community. In addition, educational opportunities will be provided through health and wellness programming.

The festival is presented by Savannah State University and the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Resources. Additional sponsorship is provided by South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. All festival events and activities are free of admission and open to the public thanks to generous community sponsors and donors. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years. SSU Names New Police Chief

Photo Credit: Jordan Ewing Savannah State University has selected Clarella “Meshia” Thomas as the new campus Chief of Police effective immediately. Thomas brings to SSU a wealth of public safety knowledge and experience that spans 23 years. In appointing Thomas, SSU aims to strengthen its commitment to campus safety and public service to all members of the campus community, including more than 1,900 residential students. Most recently, Thomas served as chief of police and director of public safety at Wellesley College (Mass.) from 2021-2023 and Virginia Union University (Va.) from 2019-2021. Thomas’ public safety career began at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2001 where she rose through the ranks to become patrol services lieutenant. Additionally, she served at the University of Chicago as captain of patrol services from 2013-2016 and at Vanderbilt University as captain of professional standards
