Savannah State University Honors Graduate with President’s Second Mile Award

Savannah State University (SSU) has named honor graduate Lindsay S. Anderson the recipient of the President’s Second Mile Award. Anderson received the honor during the commencement ceremony held on May 6. 

Presented during each commencement ceremony to a deserving senior in recognition of stellar and meritorious achievement, the President's Second Mile Award is the highest honor awarded to a student and is based upon character, values, leadership, and service to the university and the larger community. 

The President's Second Mile Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a graduating senior.

Anderson, a third-generation SSU scholar and biology major from Savannah, is described by peers as someone with impeccable values and an inspiring dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. One of the faculty member's nominating Anderson said she is "an emerging force of compelling thought, compassionate service and devoted civic pursuits."

Anderson is a mental health advocate, and dedicated many volunteer hours with the American Association of Suicide Prevention. Other community involvement includes membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and volunteering with the SSU's STEM Success Center and as a biology tutor and a K-12 Lego League mentor. During her time at Savannah State, Anderson served as president of the student organization Active Minds, and founder and president of Tigers Who Research. 

Having secured graduate school offers from four prestigious institutions, Anderson has decided to attend The Ohio State University starting fall 2022 to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. After which, she plans to enter academia to develop pathways for students of color with an interest in biomedical research.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
