Savannah State University Showcases Gabrielle Torres Art Installation

Savannah State University’s (SSU) Visual and Performing Arts Program is showcasing a new art installation featuring the work of Gabrielle Torres on display today through Sept. 10. Located on the university’s campus in the Kennedy Fine Arts Center, the Kennedy Fine Arts Gallery is available for viewing Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.


“At an HBCU, as an interdisciplinary art program, we love to bring in mixed media and feature installation artists to make these works freely available to our students as a learning tool as well as the wider community,” said Christen Clougherty, Ph.D., assistant professor and galleries director. “This allows different audiences to share the communal experience of exploring the ideas.”

The solo mixed media exhibition titled, “Question Everything,” contemplates colonialism's effects on all people, challenging the viewer to think strategically about mannerisms, traditions, stereotypes, and histories, and to consider the variety of the human experience. “Often in life, we are complacent in our thoughts, actions, and upbringing; humanity seldomly questions the powers at play beyond the scope of the superstructure,” said Torres.

In addition to viewing the new installation, the public is also invited to attend a reception in the gallery with the artist on Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5 – 7 p.m. An artist talk will be held in the Kennedy Fine Arts Center on Friday, Aug. 26 from 2 – 3 p.m. There is no charge to participate.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia. SSU Mourns the Passing of Former Athletics Director

  Savannah State University is deeply saddened by the passing of former Director of Athletics, Mr. Sterling Steward. A proud native of New Orleans, Mr. Steward served as SSU’s Director of Athletics from 2011 to 2018. Throughout his tenure, his leadership, dedication, and commitment to the success of student-athletes made a profound and lasting impact on the entire SSU community.
