Savannah State University Welcomes Military Bands to Campus, Offering Free Concert

Savannah State University will welcome the 3rd Infantry Division Band to campus to perform in T.A. Wright Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Savannah State University’s Visual and Performing Arts Program will welcome two bands, the 3rd Infantry Division Band and the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, to perform in concert for community members and students studying music on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Free and open to the public, the event will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. at T.A. Wright Stadium. Masterclasses will be provided to students followed by a question and answer session.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to see and learn from professional instrumentalists whose level of perfection is unrivaled,” said Gabriel L. Woods, Ph.D., Savannah State University assistant professor of Music Education. “We are excited to help bridge the gap between HBCUs and military bands, to build these relationships and expose our students to some of the best trained and disciplined musicians in the world.”

A 40-member unit with a variety of performing groups and ensembles including solo instrumentalists, the 3rd Infantry Division Band resides at Fort Stewart, Ga., and is known as the “Best Band in the Land.” The band also travels throughout the southeast U.S. as a goodwill ambassador for the U.S. government and has performed in Africa, France, Italy, Central Europe, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps will also play at T.A. Wright Stadium Wednesday.

In addition, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is the only unit of its kind in the armed forces, and is part of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). The Fife and Drum Corps is stationed at Fort Myer, VA. This unit performs in American Revolution uniforms patterned after those worn by the musicians of Gen. George Washington's Continental Army, consisting of black tricorn hats, white wigs, waistcoats, colonial coveralls, and distinct red regimental coats.

Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years. SSU Names New Police Chief

Photo Credit: Jordan Ewing Savannah State University has selected Clarella “Meshia” Thomas as the new campus Chief of Police effective immediately. Thomas brings to SSU a wealth of public safety knowledge and experience that spans 23 years. In appointing Thomas, SSU aims to strengthen its commitment to campus safety and public service to all members of the campus community, including more than 1,900 residential students. Most recently, Thomas served as chief of police and director of public safety at Wellesley College (Mass.) from 2021-2023 and Virginia Union University (Va.) from 2019-2021. Thomas’ public safety career began at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2001 where she rose through the ranks to become patrol services lieutenant. Additionally, she served at the University of Chicago as captain of patrol services from 2013-2016 and at Vanderbilt University as captain of professional standards
