Savannah State University Welcomes Telfair Museums’ Friends of African American Arts Exhibit

Telfair Museums’ Friends of African American Arts exhibit will be on display through May 30.

Savannah State University’s Visual and Performing Arts program is showcasing a new group exhibition by Telfair Museums’ Friends of African American Arts (FAAA) with Guest Curator and local Savannah artist, Betsy Cain. As part of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, the exhibition will run Thursday, Feb. 23 through Monday, May 30 in the Kennedy Fine Arts Gallery, located in the Kennedy Fine Arts Building, 3219 College St. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.

“We are delighted to host the many talented FAAA artists to exhibit on campus once again,” said Professor Nicholas Silberg, department chair of Fine Arts, Humanities and Wellness. “It is a wonderful opportunity for our students and the community to be able to view the art and interact with the artists.”

Telfair Museums’ Friends of African American Arts was formed in 2007 with a mandate to raise public awareness in and to promote development and understanding of art by African Americans. Over the years, FAAA has evolved into a vibrant community of artists, collectors and art enthusiasts. This exhibition features work in a variety of media — painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media — by more than 30 current FAAA members.

Exhibiting artists include Nancy Acosta, Joshua Alexandar, Tony Artemisia, Bobby Bagley, Leroy Bolden Jr., Deneen Broxton-Harrison, Kayla Bullock, Kimberly Dobson, Autumn Gary, Tula Gary, Breonca Heals, Haroun Homayun, Ashley Inniss, Patrice Jackson, Olivia Johnson, Ligel Lambert, Angela Mathis, Cierra Marion, Pamela McLauren, Steven Ogle, Bri Anna Richards, Kat Robertson, Annissa Roland, Julia Roland, Wendell Smith, Nicholas Seward, Kathy Varadi, Nichelle Wilson-Parish, Brian Woods, Calvin Woodum, and Qing Xiang.

Congratulations 2021-2022 Retirees

This coming fall, Savannah State University (SSU) will celebrate 17 retired faculty and staff members with a combined 289 years of service to the University by the Sea. These individuals represent 14 departments cross-organizationally from Sponsored Research and Engineering Technology to Facilities. No matter where they have worked, each has played a significant role in the university and the lives of students. We thank and honor them for their commitment and the tireless hours of hard work they have demonstrated to further the mission of Savannah State University. We caught up with these dedicated Tigers to find out their fondest memories of working at SSU and their plans for retirement. Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years. Starting as a graduate assistant, McGriff tutored running backs before coaching the secondary in 1991-92 and then served as defensive coordinator in 1993-94. He was Savanna

Savannah State University to Honor Students’ Academic Achievement

Savannah State University's Annual Honors Convocation Ceremony is Thursday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. Savannah State University (SSU) will recognize the academic achievements of more than 935 students during the Annual Honors Convocation Ceremony on the front lawn of the Kennedy Fine Arts Center, Thursday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. Exceptional students from the university’s four colleges – College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Sciences and Technology, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences– will be awarded.
