Savannah State University Receives $25,000 Donation from Hyundai for STEM Scholarships

Savannah State University (SSU) has received a $25,000 gift from Hyundai Motor America in support of undergraduate students in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Additional to the scholarship investment, the funds will also be used to provide STEM camps to local children, to help expose more young minds to these areas of study, and promote more diversity in these careers.

“Savannah State University is excited about our partnership with Hyundai,” said Cynthia Robinson Alexander, Interim President of Savannah State University. “This ongoing collaboration will allow us to better serve our students and our community. We know this is the first of many great initiatives and look forward to working together to have a lasting impact on our region.”

Brandon Ramirez, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and External Relations for Hyundai Motor America presented the check to the university. “Hyundai is committed to progress for humanity and improving the wellbeing of society, which includes supporting today’s youth to prepare for a better tomorrow,” said Ramirez. “We are proud to partner with Savannah State University to provide STEM scholarships.

The donation is part of the Hyundai Hope corporate social responsibility initiative, which is committed to the principal of Progress for Humanity and the goal of improving the wellbeing of society.

Savannah State University is the first public HBCU in the state of Georgia and the first institution of higher education in the city of Savannah. The university fosters engaged learning and personal growth in a student-centered environment that celebrates the African American legacy while nurturing a diverse student body.

Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. Inaugural Class of Nominees Recognizes Achievements of Young Alumni Savannah, GA – Savannah State University (SSU) recently announced the inaugural Class of 40 Under 40 Awards recipients, a prestigious recognition to applaud the outstanding success stories of its young alumni and inspire current and future students.   SSU will honor the recipients with an award ceremony including recipients, guests and faculty on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.   The award recognizes the contributions of individuals who have excelled in their respective fields before the age of 40.
