SSU’s Interim President Appoints Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff

Savannah State University’s (SSU) Interim President Cynthia Robinson Alexander, J.D. is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Karen Wheel Carter as Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff. 

Carter brings to SSU more than 30 years of leadership experience in higher education, including serving at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. More recently, she served for 15 years at Georgia State University as Department Chair, Associate Academic Dean for Business and Health Professions, Associate Dean for Student Success, and Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at Perimeter College. 

In her various roles, she has provided leadership to faculty and staff while promoting student success. She has led institutional strategic planning and been responsible for facilitating organizational learning and change within her units. She was pivotal in advancing faculty development and implementing critical changes in support of program enhancements and administrative innovations. Most recently, Carter provided leadership in her role as Co-Chair of the Georgia State University’s Strategic Planning Committee.

SSU Announces 2025 Scholarship Gala

Savannah State University (SSU) is pleased to announce the 26th Anniversary Scholarship Gala will be held on Saturday, Apr. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Savannah Convention Center. The annual community event celebrates local leaders while raising funds to provide financial assistance to SSU students, 90% of whom receive some sort of financial assistance for college. Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
