SSU Crowns Miss and Mister Savannah State University

From left, Mr. Raymond Clarke, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs; Mr. Charles Barnett Alexander, SSU First Gentleman; Cynthia Robinson Alexander, J.D., SSU interim president; Mister SSU Alexander Richardson; Miss SSU Taianah Williams; Dr. Karen Wheel Carter, interim executive vice president and chief of staff; Ms. LeAndrea Mikell, interim vice president for university advancement and external affairs; and Mr. Jerry Rackliffe, J.D., interim senior vice president for organizational effectiveness.

The Coronation of Miss and Mister Savannah State University, Taianah Williams and Alexander Richardson, was held during Homecoming week as part a time-honored tradition on the Savannah State University campus.

Williams, a senior majoring in criminal justice, and Richardson, a senior majoring in middle grades education, join an exclusive list of student ambassadors who are chosen by their peers to serve as the voice of the student population on campus.

Research shows that homecoming courts can be traced back to the 1920s and since that time have been an integral part of Homecoming festivities. It is a custom that allows students to participate in the democratic process of electing those who will represent them. Over time, the tradition evolved into the campus royalty that serves all year.

In addition to Miss and Mister Savannah State University, SSU also has royal representation for each academic class. For the 2023-24 academic year, those representatives are:

  • Miss Senior Adrian Brown, from Dublin, Ga., social work major
  • Mister Senior Jasen MaGee, from Rex, Ga, computer science/cyber security major
  • Miss Junior Tiffani Grayes, from Atlanta, Ga., computer science major
