SSU’s Student-Led Literary Journal Kicks Off Campus Competition,
Hosts Special Events Nov. 6 -10

 Estuary Creative Arts Journal, Savannah State University’s student-led publication, announces that it is seeking submissions from students across the campus for its 2023-2024 literary competition. The submission categories include best overall poem; best overall short story; and best narrative non-fiction. In addition, the publication will accept artwork, comics, and any works of imagination. The deadline for submission is Feb. 1, 2024. Winners will be announced on Feb. 23. All submissions must be submitted to estuary@savannahstate.edu. All entries must include full name, major, entry category and contact information. Attached files must be word document or image files for art. 

Additionally, Estuary is hosting a series of events that include: 

Poetry Reading on the Patio - Nov. 7, 5 p.m., Gardner Hall

An open mic night by the marsh featuring music, readings and fellowship in partnership with the International Club. Snacks and past copies of Estuary will be available. 

Workshop by Halle Hill - Nov. 8, 3:30 p.m., Kennedy Room 200; Live Performance Nov. 9

Halle, author of Good Women and winner of the 2020 Oxford American Debut Fiction Prize, will lead a workshop on the narrative process and talk about her craft and her book. Halle will also perform Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m. at Seersucker Live, 210 W Victory Drive, Savannah, Ga. (For ticket info visit seersucker). 

Estuary Club Open Workshop, Nov. 9, 3 p.m. Kennedy Room 200

Documentary film Iron Family star Jazmine Faries will host a workshop and will offer feedback on students’ works-in-progress. She also will discuss diversity and inclusion. 

Craft Talk Featuring CM Burroughs, Nov. 10, 11 a.m. Asa Gordon Library Art Gallery and Reading at 6:30 p.m., Book Lady Bookstore, 6 E. Liberty Street, Savannah, Ga.

The Georgia Poetry Circuity, the Book Lady Bookstore and Estuary present renowned poet and professor CM Burroughs. Burroughs is the recipient of awards and fellowships from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Cave Canem Foundation. She has received commissions from the Studio Museum of Harlem and the Warhol Museum to create poetry for art installations. 

With the exception of the Halle Hill live performance, all events are free and open to the public. 

About CM Burroughs:

Burroughs is associate professor of poetry in the English and Creative Writing Department at Columbia College Chicago. She is the author of two collections: The Vital System (Tupelo Press, 2012) and Master Suffering (Tupelo Press, 2021.) Burroughs has been awarded fellowships and grants from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Djerassi Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Cave Canem Foundation. She has received commissions from the Studio Museum of Harlem and the Warhol Museum to create poetry in response to art installations. Burroughs’ poetry has appeared in journals and anthologies including Poetry magazine, Callaloo, jubilat, Ploughshares, VOLT, Best American Experimental Writing Anthology, and The Golden Shovel Anthology: New Poems Honoring Gwendolyn Brooks. Burroughs has been a featured reader and has given poetry lectures and writing workshops at institutions and reading series across America and internationally. Burroughs received her MFA from University of Pittsburgh and her BA from Sweet Briar College.  

About the Georgia Poetry Circuit:

The Georgia Poetry Circuit is a consortium of ten Georgia colleges and universities working together to bring three poets of national and international reputation annually to all members’ campuses, providing an important access to the literary arts for Georgia residents across the state. At each school, each Circuit poet gives a free and open reading of his/her work. Visiting poets also meet with creative writing students at each campus for workshops, talks, or extended question and answer sessions. In addition to the opportunity to learn about the works by diverse writers of national and international reputation, the Circuit events provide Georgia students with a valuable educational opportunity for interaction with many of the best contemporary poets in and outside the United States.

Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years.
