SSU Hosts Asa R. Gordon
For the Presentation of “Bullets to Ballots” Feb. 21 - 22
Savannah State University's Asa H. Gordon Library is honored to host Mr. Asa R. Gordon on February 21 at 4 p.m. and February 22 at 2 p.m. to share his new virtual exhibit "Bullets to Ballots: Voting Rights Legacy of the United States Colored Troops." The virtual exhibit shares the impact of black Civil War veterans, freedmen, and white congressional allies during the Reconstruction period. The exhibit will be hosted in the Asa H. Gordon Library’s Art Gallery on the second floor. Asa R. Gordon is a research historian and consulting curator of the African American Civil War Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. His work on the voting rights legacy of the United States Colored Troops garnered him the National Civil Rights Conference Civil Rights and Social Justice Award in 2016. He also serves as secretary-general of the Sons and Daughters of the United States Colored Troops. Gordon is also a retired NASA astrodynamicist.
Gordon is the son of the library's namesake, Asa H. Gordon, Ph.D. (1896-1957), a professor of history at the college from 1928 to 1941 and Joan McAllister Gordon, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of social sciences from 1928 to 1971. The library was named for Asa H. Gordon in 1966 to posthumously honor him as the first professor to publish a book, Sketches of Negro Life and History in South Carolina, in 1929. His second book, The Georgia Negro, was published in 1937.
