SSU's Dr. Moore is New Coordinator for FYE Program

The Office of Academic Affairs, under the guidance of Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Richard Miller, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Andrea Moore, Associate Professor, Biology, as the Academic Coordinator for the First-Year Experience (FYE) Program.

Dr. Moore brings experience, dedication, and history of success. Her commitment to academic rigor and student accomplishment has been evident throughout her tenure at Savannah State University where she continues her service to Faculty Senate, after having served as Faculty Senate President for two years, and will continue her responsibilities as Associate Professor in the College of Science and Technology.

In expressing his gratitude, Provost Miller extended his sincere thanks to Frank J. Mendelson, Lecturer, College of Business Administration, Management, who has served as the Academic Coordinator for the FYE Program for five of the six terms since 2018. During that time, Mendelson convened a committee of SSU staff and faculty to reform the curricula with their input and build on a model created by SSU Director of Career Services, Leadership, and Professional Development, Mr. Shed Dawson, Jr.

Miller said, "Frank has guided the First-Year Experience Program as a critical element for catalyzing student engagement at SSU, and we are grateful for his service.”

Mendelson said, "I am pleased to pass the baton to Dr. Moore, whose expertise, leadership and passion for the university experience will elevate the program as a model for successive cohorts, leading to growth and strength of the Tiger community.”

Dr. Moore, in accepting her new role, expressed her excitement and commitment to fostering a positive and transformative experience for first-year students. "I am honored to lead the First-Year Experience Program and am dedicated to supporting the academic and personal development of our students while instilling Tiger values and Tiger pride. I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the program's impact and ensure a seamless transition for our incoming students," said Dr. Moore.

The Office of Academic Affairs is confident that Dr. Andrea Moore's leadership will contribute to the continued success and growth of the FYE Program, further solidifying Savannah State University’s commitment to providing an exceptional academic experience for all students who become part of our history and legacy.

Alumni Spotlight Wall: 28 Tigers Who Have Made and are Making History

During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years.
