Jalen (left) and Jasen Magee graduated in May 2024 with matching degrees in computer science technology with a concentration in cybersecurity.
Growing up in a family of educators, Jalen and Jasen Magee had a crisp understanding of parental expectations. Raised by a mother who is a high school assistant principal and a father who teaches social studies, there wasn’t much room for mixed signals in the Magee household.
“We grew up with high expectations and over time you grew to accept them and it made you want to make your family proud,” said Jasen, who, together with his twin brother, Jalen, will graduate in May 2024 with a degree in computer science technology with a concentration in cybersecurity. Yes, both are earning the same degree and both are graduating with institutional GPAs hovering in the 3.6 – 3.7 range.
The Stockbridge, Ga., twins found their way to Savannah State University after college visits that took them to several other HBCUs in and outside of Georgia. It was raining the day the visited SSU. “But even with the rain, it was still a good time,” said Jasen. Both of their parents attended HBCUs. Mrs. Magee graduated from Grambling State University in La. Mr. Magee earned his degree from Jackson State University in Mississippi.
“We are an HBCU family and we hope to continue the HBCU tradition,” said Jasen.
Both twins were attracted to cybersecurity studies for similar reasons but each brought his own focus. Jasen found interest in online exercises that pit computer hacker against protective software. Jalen was always intrigued about how cybersecurity breaches can bring an organization to its knees. During their four years on the SSU campus, more than a brotherly rivalry, they developed a bond of support for each other.
“At school we have always tried to support each other,” said Jalen. His brother, added, “When it got overwhelming, we were supporting each other.”
Jasen found himself socially flourishing in his third year and became vice president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He also earned honors as Mr. Senior and Mr. NAACP. Jalen chose to use his free time to focus on cybersecurity research.
“We are really seeing now how our parents built a great foundation for us,” said Jasen.
To Mr. and Ms. Magee, we at SSU would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude.
