Georgia Film Academy Offers Pathways to Careers in Film/TV/Digital Entertainment Industries

Savannah State University (SSU) students can learn from professionals in the film, television and digital entertainment industries through the Georgia Film Academy (GFA), a professional organization and a unit of the University System of Georgia committed to advancing the entertainment arts industry and its workforce in Georgia.

Students can earn GFA certificates in:
  • Film & Television Production
  • Film & Television Post-Production
  • Digital Entertainment, Esports & Game Development
These certifications are recognized by production companies, studios, networks, vendors, and other entertainment businesses which may employ Georgians. Students who chose to pursue a GFA certificate will have the opportunity to: 
  • Learn from professionals in the film, television, and digital entertainment industries.
  • Take classes at an industry hub equipped with a package of professional-level equipment.
  • Participate in on-set, hands-on experience, and simulated “real world” projects, coupled with in-classroom coursework.
  • Work hands-on with professional production equipment (cameras, sound gear, lights, etc.) as well as production trucks and generators on studio soundstages.
  • Apply for an internship or apprenticeship on a major film production set, television studio, editing house, or digital entertainment lab to develop recognized film credits, through partnerships with professional productions.
  • Receive one-on-one job counseling to include resume preparation, job research, and job placement outreach from GFA.
In fall 2024, SSU will offer Introduction to Film & Television Production (GFA 1000) and Introduction to Film & Television Post-Production (GFA 1040). The courses serve as the first six credit hours to their respective 18-credit hour Georgia Film Academy professional certifications.

Current SSU students who are interested in GFA courses or obtaining certification should meet with their academic advisor prior to registering. Prospective students can apply HERE.

Savannah State University Announces 40 Under 40 Recipients

Inaugural Class of Nominees Recognizes Achievements of Young Alumni Savannah, GA – Savannah State University (SSU) recently announced the inaugural Class of 40 Under 40 Awards recipients, a prestigious recognition to applaud the outstanding success stories of its young alumni and inspire current and future students.   SSU will honor the recipients with an award ceremony including recipients, guests and faculty on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.   The award recognizes the contributions of individuals who have excelled in their respective fields before the age of 40. During the month of February, each day, as we celebrate Black history, we will shine a light on Savannah State University's notable alumni who have made and are making history. Wesley McGriff, class of '90 Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. A native of Tifton, Ga., Wesley McGriff, class of 1990, is the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach at the University of Louisville. McGriff played at South Carolina State for one year before transferring to Savannah State, where he started at outside linebacker for three seasons and was named the conference’s 1989 Male Academic Athlete of the Year. McGriff has been in the coaching ranks since 1990 when he was hired as a graduate assistant at Savannah State, where he coached for four years.
