SSU’s Hubbard and Sanders Named To 2024 SIAC Hall of Fame Class
Former Savannah State University basketball
standouts Harold Hubbard (above left) and Mabel Sanders have been named to the 2024 Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Hall of Fame Class, the league recently
announced.
Hubbard dominated the hardwood at Savannah State in the late seventies, becoming one of the top scorers and rebounders in SSU Men's Basketball history, earning All-Conference, All-American and conference Most Valuable Player selections.
In 92 games, Hubbard scored 1,901 points and pulled down 955 rebounds for an average of 20.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. The Atlanta, Georgia native helped the Tigers win SIAC championships during the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons.
In 1980, the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Hubbard in the fourth round. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position with the Washington Generals before signing with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1981. He toured with the team until 1991.
Sanders lettered in women's basketball at Savannah State from 1988 to 1992. Sanders led the nation in rebounding with 14.5 rebounds per game in 1991, and she maintained dominance, leading the nation with 14.7 rebounds per game her senior year.
During her career with the Lady Tigers, the Augusta, Georgia native played in 106 games, scored 1,839 points and grabbed 1,405 rebounds for a career averaged on 17.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.
She was a three-time all-conference selection, 1991 Black College Sports Information Directors All-America selection and 1992 SIAC Player of the Year. Her phenomenal performance stands more than 30 years later as she holds 10th place in the NCAA DII record books for most career rebounds with 1,405 boards. Savannah State inducted Sanders into its Hall of Fame in 2010.
Hubbard and Sanders will be the sixth and seventh members of the SIAC Hall of Fame from Savannah State, joining John Myles (1992), Ella Williams Fisher (1993), Joseph Turner (1994), Frank Ellis Jr. (1995) and Shannon Sharpe (2014).
The SIAC Hall of Fame was established to preserve the esteemed history of the conference and celebrate the accomplishments of former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors. Since its inception in 1992, the SIAC Hall of Fame has inducted 161 distinguished honorees.
In addition to Hubbard and Sanders, the 2024 SIAC Hall of Fame Class also includes Willie Washington (Benedict College), Dr. Kimberly Dugger (Fort Valley State University), Jacoby Jones (Lane College), William King Jr. (Tuskegee University) and Frank Walker (Tuskegee University).
The SIAC will honor the seven individuals for their notable contributions to its member institutions during the 2024 SIAC Hall of Fame Induction on July 10 at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
