Tropical Storm Helene Update

We are monitoring weather reports about Tropical Storm Helene, which predict strong to severe thunderstorms for the Savannah area over the next couple of days. The storm(s) may produce high winds, heavy rain, lightning and isolated tornadoes, which may result in flooding, power outages, wind damage, downed trees and scattered debris.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the following Preparation & Safety Steps before the storm: 
  • Sign up for the SSU Emergency Alert system known as Everbridge- Everbridge - Emergency alerts (savannahstate.edu)
  • Keep your laptop and cell phone charged. If possible have a rechargeable portable charger ready for use
  • Locate or purchase a flashlight and ensure you have extra batteries on hand (on-campus residents can secure flashlights from Housing Staff)
  • Pack a backpack-size bag with necessities to include your charging devices and chargers, prescription medicine, several days’ worth of clothing, toiletries, textbooks, and other essential items

University email addresses are automatically provided to Everbridge and will be the primary method of delivering alerts.

How to use the Everbridge app:
  • Download the Everbridge app from Google Play or Apple App Store
  • Tap “Find an organization or subscription” and type the keyword SSU
  • Create a Username and Password and tap the checkbox next to I Accept the Terms of Use
  • Create user profile by filling in all appropriate fields
  • Fill in cell number and personal email address. The My Subscription page can be skipped
  • Review user information and finish

SSU Foundation, Inc. Elects New Officers

    Chairwoman, Dr. Clementine Washington  The Savannah State University Foundation elected new officers during its 2025 winter board meeting held January 18 on the Savannah State University campus. The new officers will serve a 3-year term and were sworn into their new roles effective immediately. Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
