Hurricane Milton Update 3

 

Dear SSU Community:

The campus of Savannah State University will continue normal operations based on the latest information provided by the National Weather Service, Chatham County Emergency Agency, and the National Hurricane Center. Our emergency management team is closely monitoring Hurricane Milton and conducting formal check-ins multiple times daily to assess new information. During the 6:30 p.m. briefing this evening, the team reviewed the national weather service update which indicates no change to the storm’s projected path and impact. The Savannah area is currently predicted to receive tropical storm force winds and rain bands from Hurricane Milton. These impacts may cause a storm surge leading to tidal flooding of low-lying areas on Thursday.

 

While the campus is expected to experience minimal impacts, we understand that circumstances can change quickly. Therefore, the University has begun preparations to mitigate any impact that may be felt from the storm. These include stocking up on fuel, testing our emergency generators, and working with our food services partner, Aladdin, to ensure that food operations continue. 

 

This contingency planning is intended in situations where we experience a loss of power or other significant impact to the campus. This will ensure that students will have continued food service and a place to charge their devices as needed.

 

At this time, there are no changes to class schedules or University operations. The University will provide another update Wednesday morning immediately after the 10:00 a.m. briefing.  Updates will also be posted at https://savannahstateuniversitynews.blogspot.com/ and on the university’s official social media channels. If there are any changes before then, we will promptly notify you so you can make any necessary preparations.

 

Campus efforts are spearheaded by Chief Thomas with support from the SSU emergency management team and local government agencies. We encourage students to stay prepared and remain focused on their classes. Rest assured, we will promptly update you with any changes to university operations.

 

Based on the most recent information, we understand that Florida residents are evacuating to Georgia, resulting in heavy traffic along evacuation routes. 

 

Please make sure you are registered to receive SSU emergency alerts on the Everbridge app. Make sure you charge all electronic devices, fill up your vehicles, and please be safe!

 

DO NOT ENTER AREAS WITH HIGH WATER LEVELS. Park in areas on higher ground Again, do not attempt to pass through areas with high water levels.  Slow down and be extra cautious while driving on-campus as well as throughout the city as several areas of Savannah are flood zones (i.e. Victory Drive).

 

Adequate Disaster Supplies

• Flashlight and extra batteries

• Emergency food and water

• Essential medicines

• Cash and credit cards

    Thanks for this information. As of Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Gov Brian Kemp, declared a state of emergency ahead of Milton. Please don't wait to long to make a decision about evacuation. The staff and the students should be given adequate time to evacuate and make it to safety.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
