Hurricane Milton Update Wednesday, October 9th '

Savannah State University (SSU) continues to be guided by the National Weather Service’s projections regarding Hurricane Milton.

The Chatham County/Savannah, Ga area is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning.  Out of an abundance of caution, SSU is closely monitoring and responding to the following:

  •  The time of impact on the campus has moved from overnight Wednesday to early Thursday morning through Thursday evening.
  •  Using an abundance of caution and because the campus is located on the marsh, the University will transition to remote learning on Thursday, October 10th through Friday, October 11th.
  • Residence halls will remain open. In the event that dining services are altered, a separate email will be sent with hours and instructions.
  • We anticipate returning to normal operations for students on Saturday, October 12th. We will provide an update by noon on Friday, October 11th. Instructions on how to report time will be communicated in an additional email.
  • It is projected that this will result in a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet above normally dry ground, with the most significant potential for inundation occurring with the high tide on Thursday afternoon.
  • Tropical storm-force winds will begin to impact coastal areas Thursday morning into Thursday afternoon, with the highest winds occurring near the coast.

Staff Update:

  •  All Essential personnel will report in person on Thursday, October 10th, all others will work remotely.
  • We anticipate returning to normal operations for employees on Friday, October 11th. We will provide an update on Thursday evening about the conditions of campus and Friday operations. Instructions on how to report time will be communicated in an additional email.

Georgia Power updates indicate that any power outages may be extended as they continue to restore power outages from Hurricane Helene.

The University has proactively begun preparations to mitigate any impact from the storm. These include stocking up on fuel, testing our emergency generators, and working with our food services partner, Aladdin, to ensure food operations continue. All this contingency planning is intended in case we have a loss of power or other significant impact to the campus. This will ensure that students will have food and a place to charge their devices if they lose power.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
