IMPORTANT TRAFFIC UPDATE

This is to inform you about the Every Woman’s Marathon happening this weekend in Savannah. The Marathon will affect several streets and traffic patterns in the surrounding areas, including those on the university campus. All students, faculty, staff, alumni, student organizations, and friends are invited to cheer on the runners.

Students will be able to earn volunteer hours for this event. The marathon is slated to be on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please be aware of the following road closures and detours.

Campus Road Closures:
  • Alexis Circle will be CLOSED starting at 5 p.m., Friday, November 15 through 1 p.m. Saturday, November 16.
  • Vehicles that are still on the circle Friday night by 10 PM will be towed at the owner's expense.
  • The LaRoche gate will close at 7 a.m. on Saturday, November 16; the Jasmine, Whatley and Falligant entrances will be accessible on race day.
  • Residents of University Commons, University Village, Camilla Hubert, Tiger Court, Tiger Place or Richard R. Wright Sr. who may need to leave campus during the race period should park in one of the available parking lots by 10 p.m. Friday, November 15. The available lots are Payne Hall, behind Colston Administration Building., behind the King-Frazier Student Center, and behind Tiger Court.
  • The Common Gates near building #1 will be open during the race.
  • Consult the following website for city-wide road closure info:
Saturday’s Dining Hours:

King Frazier – 9 - 10 a.m. (breakfast); 12 - 2 p.m. (lunch); and 4:30 - 8 p.m. (dinner).

Event Details:

The Every Woman’s Marathon is a significant event that celebrates women’s health, fitness, and empowerment. Thousands of participants will be running through various areas of Savannah, including the historic downtown district and surrounding neighborhoods. SSU's portion of marathons has been a favorite to the runners over the past years.

We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to plan accordingly and allow for extra travel time when coming to and leaving from campus. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as the city hosts this important event.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia. SSU Mourns the Passing of Former Athletics Director

  Savannah State University is deeply saddened by the passing of former Director of Athletics, Mr. Sterling Steward. A proud native of New Orleans, Mr. Steward served as SSU’s Director of Athletics from 2011 to 2018. Throughout his tenure, his leadership, dedication, and commitment to the success of student-athletes made a profound and lasting impact on the entire SSU community. Savannah State University will forever be grateful for Mr. Steward’s numerous contributions to SSU Athletics and the University as a whole.
