SSU's WHCJ 90.3 FM in the Run for Best Local Radio Station - Vote Now!


 Dear SSU Campus Community,

Nominations are now under way for Connect Savannah's 2025 Best of Savannah Readers’ Poll. Our campus radio station, WHCJ (90.3 FM) is in the running for Best Local Radio Station and our on-air programmers Theron “Ike” Carter, and Ras Hanif Haynes are also in the running for Best Local Radio Personalities.

The nomination period runs online through January 31th. We need continuous nominations to make it to the top 10. Help us support WHCJ and and our radio programmers by submitting your nomination now!

Final voting for the top 10 nominees will take place from February 10th through March 17th. Winners will be published online on May 22, 2025. The links to the nominations are below.

About WHCJ 90.3 FM:
Established in 1975 as a non-commercial, educational public radio facility under the auspices of Savannah State College, WHCJ is now the Voice of Savannah State University with a broadcast radius of approximately 50 miles. WHCJ's music programming consists of jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, Latin, African, Indian, neo soul and positive music from the hip hop culture. The station's primary mission is to educate its listening audience through selective programming and promote and enhance the image of Savannah State University. Ms. Grace Curry, AKA Lady Grace, serves as director.

About Theron “Ike” Carter:
A Savannah native, Mr. Carter is a graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School and attended Howard University from 1958-1961 prior to joining the U.S. Armed Forces where he served from 1961-1965. He served as director of WHCJ for more than 20 years, being responsible for operations and multiple weekly programming. He retired in 2015, but continues to produce weekly broadcasts of “Nothing but the Blues" and “Impressions.” He served as president of the Coastal Jazz Association for over 10 years. He also served as Chairman of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival for two years.

About Ras Hanif Haynes:
Ras Hanif Haynes has been a dedicated volunteer radio announcer for WHCJ 90.3 since 1983, contributing thousands of hours over three nights each week. As the station longest reigning volunteer, he has hosted four distinct weekly shows that showcase jazz, blues, gospel, and reggae music, including the second-longest running reggae program on the East Coast. Haynes has also organized several reggae concerts in Savannah, including a homecoming celebration for local artist Della Tilson Grant, a special Kwanzaa event, and the annual One Love reggae river cruise to Daufuskie Island. In addition to his work with WHCJ, Haynes is the Chair of the Pin Point Betterment Association, where he plays a key role in preserving the community's cultural heritage, fostering resilience, and revitalizing infrastructure.

SSU Announces 2025 Scholarship Gala

Savannah State University (SSU) is pleased to announce the 26th Anniversary Scholarship Gala will be held on Saturday, Apr. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Savannah Convention Center. The annual community event celebrates local leaders while raising funds to provide financial assistance to SSU students, 90% of whom receive some sort of financial assistance for college. Dr. Jermaine Whirl Named SSU President

Dr. Jermaine Whirl   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Jermaine Whirl president of Savannah State University (SSU), effective April 1, 2025. Whirl, an Aspen Fellow, most recently served as president of Augusta Technical College (ATC), a role he has held since November 2020. Whirl’s career includes nearly 20 years of service as a faculty member and administrative leader at public colleges and universities in his home state of South Carolina and in Georgia.
