SSU to Observe National Freedom Day Feb. 1

  Commemoration Founded by SSU’s First President Kicks off Black History Month   SAVANNAH, Ga - Savannah State University’s (SSU) Honors Program will host a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate National Freedom Day  at noon on Saturday, Feb. 1.  at the Richard R. Wright Sr. bust in front of Wright Hall on the SSU campus,  3219 College Street, Savannah. The event is free and open to the public.   Wright, who was SSU’s first president in 1890, later rallied local and national leaders to establish National Freedom Day to memorialize President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. This year’s celebration marks the 160 th   anniversary of that historic act. Savannah Black Heritage Festival Opens Feb. 1

  Savannah State University is pleased to announce that the 36th Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival will take place from February 1- 28, 2025. “Reimagining Excellence” is this year’s central theme that challenges everyone to look beyond traditional definitions to embrace a broader perspective of what it means to achieve greatness. The theme is an invitation to the community to see excellence in the innovations and contributions of our ancestors and contemporary leaders alike. The schedule will include national and regional musicians of many genres, dance performances, local youth talent, historic tours, and visual art exhibitions by internationally acclaimed and local artists.   Greetings, SSU Campus Community: Hope you are safe and warm. As employees are able to return to campus, we ask you remain alert and cautious of the dangers of ice accumulations and cold temperatures. As we move back to normal campus operations over the weekend and   Monday, January 27th , we encourage everyone on campus to exercise caution while navigating the grounds. Temperatures remain low and ice has accumulated in many locations.  Your safety is the top priority, and we want to ensure a smooth and secure transition back to normal operations. Greetings, SSU Campus Community:  The safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our top priority. As freezing temperatures are anticipated for this evening, resulting in potentially hazardous conditions for travel in some areas, Savannah State University (SSU) will remain with an online format for all classes for students through Friday, January 24th.  The University will reopen on Friday, January 24th, to resume normal operations for staff members who can safely report to work in person.    Student Updates: Students should plan for an asynchronous learning environment  through  Friday, January 24th . Greetings, SSU Campus Community: Due to the continued inclement weather, Savannah State University (SSU) will remain with an online format for all classes for students and remote work for non-essential in-person personnel. Essential personnel will report as defined below. Student Updates: Students should plan for an asynchronous learning environment through Thursday, January 23rd. SSU Dining Update: King Frazier Student Center Continental breakfast: 9-10 am Brunch: 11 am - 4 pm with dinner pickup during that time. Student Union will be closed for dining. Employee Updates: SSU employees will continue to work remotely through Thursday, January 23rd. Employees are expected to work during normal business hours. Important Weather Update from SSU Regarding Campus Operations this Week (Jan 20, 2025)

Greetings, SSU Campus Community: In preparation for the impending winter weather, Savannah State University (SSU) will transition to an online format for all classes for students and remote work for non-essential in-person personnel.  Essential personnel will report as defined below . Administrators are diligently monitoring the winter weather event and severe weather alerts to evaluate their potential impact to the Savannah area. This weather event is predicted to include rain, sleet/snow mix and due to dangerously low temperatures, including sub-freezing wind chills, lead to hazardous driving conditions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and into Thursday morning. SSU will plan for the online learning/remote work format beginning Tuesday, January 21st through Wednesday, January 22nd. SSU's WHCJ 90.3 FM in the Run for Best Local Radio Station - Vote Now!

 Dear SSU Campus Community, Nominations are now under way for Connect Savannah's 2025 Best of Savannah Readers’ Poll. Our campus radio station, WHCJ (90.3 FM) is in the running for Best Local Radio Station and our on-air programmers Theron “Ike” Carter, and Ras Hanif Haynes are also in the running for Best Local Radio Personalities. SSU Spring 2025 Semester Update

  Dear SSU Campus Community, We are excited to welcome both new and returning Tigers back to campus as classes begin on January 13, 2025. We recognize that some students may have encountered travel challenges due to the weather in central and northern Georgia. As a result, all absences for Monday, January 13, and Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to inclement weather, will be excused. It is crucial that students proactively communicate with their professors and university housing regarding any travel delays or challenges. Please reach out to your professors in advance to discuss any missed class time and to make arrangements for completing any missed assignments. Professors will collaborate with students to ensure any missed coursework is made up. We look forward to a great semester ahead and wish you all a successful start to the year!

  Dear SSU Campus Community, We are closely monitoring the weather forecast as we prepare for significant winter weather in the coming days. A Winter Weather Warning is now in effect for North Georgia, with snow, sleet, and freezing rain anticipated on Friday, January 10th. We expect wintry precipitation to impact areas from central to northern Georgia, with the highest risk for ice accumulation focused in North Georgia, particularly along the I-85 and I-20 corridors. Recognizing that students may not be able to travel to campus during the Governor's State of Emergency declaration, all absences from class on Monday, January 13, and Tuesday, January 14, 2025, will be excused absences, and professors will work with you to make up any class work that is missed."   D ear SSU Campus Community,  The university continues to monitor the weather forecast anticipated in the coming days. A Winter Weather Warning is in effect for North Georgia, with snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected on Friday, January 10th. Wintery precipitation is likely to affect areas from central to northern Georgia. The highest risk for ice accumulation is predicted for North Georgia, especially along the I-85 and I-20 corridors. We urge anyone traveling from the north on Friday to exercise caution and assess road conditions before beginning their journey. Governor Kemp has declared a State of Emergency through Tuesday. The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) has been instructed to treat roads in advance, and we encourage everyone to limit travel as much as possible in the coming days to ensure safety. Campus Update: Inclement Weather 1.8.2025

  Dear Savannah State University Community,   A winter weather storm is expected to impact Georgia this weekend with concerns for accumulating ice (freezing rain) over parts of north & central Georgia beginning Friday.  Temperatures may trend slightly colder than the current forecast indicates, which could lead to ice accumulations farther south in central Georgia. As forecasters warn of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the region; expect the potential for dangerous road conditions as ice and snow accumulate and frigid temperatures.  Please exercise extreme caution as you make your travel plans. Broadnax Retires As Savannah State Men's Basketball Head Coach

Assistant Coach  Clevan Thompson  will assume the Interim Head Coach role, effective immediately. " We thank Coach Broadnax for his leadership of the men's basketball program here at Savannah State," remarked Director of Athletics, Opio Mashariki. "I have immense respect and gratitude for everything Coach Broadnax has done, we congratulate him on his retirement and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors."
